SUMMARY:

Contracaecum is a genus of parasitic nematodes belonging to the Anisakidae family, recognized for infecting a wide range of hosts such as fish, piscivorous birds, and aquatic mammals during the development of their life cycle. These parasites are of particular importance, being frequently associated with negative impacts on the health of their hosts, in addition to representing a potential risk to human health, especially in regions where the consumption of raw or undercooked seafood is common. The occurrence of Contracaecum spp. in aquatic environments can have significant ecological implications, affecting the health of populations of fish, birds and aquatic mammals. The identification of the species involved allows the understanding of parasite-host interactions, being essential to elucidate the ecological impacts and the extent of the potential threat that these parasites represent to human health, especially in regions where artisanal fishing and the consumption of wild animal species are traditional. Thus, this work aims to identify adult and larval stages of Contracaecum spp. parasites of Phalacrocorax brasilianus and fish that make up the diet of this bird, originating from the Soure Marine Extractive Reserve, Marajó Island-Para-Brazil, using morphological (light and scanning electron microscopy) and molecular approaches (sequencing of the regions of the internal transcribed spacers of the ribosomal DNA ITS-1, 5.8S, and ITS-2 and of the cytochrome c oxidase COX2 subunit II of the mitochondrial DNA). To date, 32 specimens of cormorants have been examined during the period from April 2020 to October 2024 from the municipality of Soure. The collected nematodes were quantified to analyze the ecological indices of parasitism. Of the 32 samples analyzed, 90.6% (n = 29) were parasitized by Contracaecum spp., with an average infection intensity of 34.4, an average abundance of 31.1, and an amplitude ranging from 3-360 parasites per host. Regarding the site of infection, the ventricle was the organ most affected by parasitism caused by Contracaecum 69% (n=20).
