SUMMARY:

Growth promoters based on amino acids (AA), minerals and B vitamins can be an alternative to improve the metabolic status and performance of beef cattle in stressful situations. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the performance and blood concentrations of glucose and cortisol of calves in the pre- and post-weaning stages, subjected to different injectable growth promoters. The experiment was conducted on a private rural property located in Santa Izabel do Pará, PA. 39 crossbred calves (Angus x Nelore) were used, aged five months and with an average initial body weight (BW) of 166.16 ± 18.06 kg. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with initial weight and sex as blocking factors. The animals were allocated to 3 treatments: Control (without application of promoters); Bovifort RF (with application of 8ml of the Bovifort RF promoter - based on B- complex vitamins); and Ultimato (with application of 8ml of the Bovifort Ultimato promoter - based on AA, minerals and vitamin B12). During the experimental period, the animals were kept on pasture made up predominantly of quicuio (Brachiaria humidicola), under a rotational grazing system, receiving mineral supplementation. The promoters were applied subcutaneously at two points: at the start of the experiment (day 01) and at weaning (day 98), at eight months of age. Weights were taken at the start of the experiment, at 41 days after the start, at weaning and 42 days after weaning. Blood samples were taken by jugular vein puncture at weaning and 13 days after weaning. The data was submitted to analysis of variance, considering the effects of treatments and blocks. The means were compared using the test “t” (P<0.10). Although the treatments with Bovifort RF and Ultimato showed 12% higher average daily gain (ADG) than the control group in the first evaluation period, the promoters did not statistically influence ADG in the pre-weaning period (P>0.10), where the values for this variable were 0.724 kg/an/day for the animals in the Ultimato group; 0.726 kg/an/day for the Bovifort RF group; and 0.674 kg/an/day for the Control group. On the other hand, in the post-weaning period, the animals in the Ultimato group had higher ADG (P= 0.0709) and WG (P= 0.0709) than the others, with ADG= 0.270; 0.088 and -0.009 kg/an/day and WG= 8.69; 3.69 and -0.38 kg, for the Bovifort Ultimato, Bovifort RF and Control treatments, respectively. The ADG for the total period (P= 0.0622) and the WG for the total period (P= 0.0620) were also higher for the Ultimato treatment, where the ADG was 0.569; 0.516 and 0.469 kg/an/day and the WG= 79.69; 72.65 and 65.71 kg, for the animals in the Bovifort Ultimato, Bovifort RF and Control groups, respectively. The growth promoters did not influence blood glucose and cortisol concentrations (P>0.10). According to the results, the growth promoter Bovifort Ultimato provided the best performance for Angus x Nelore crossbred calves from 5 to 9 months of age, with the highest ADG and WG in the post-weaning period standing out.
