SUMMARY:

Deferring pastures is a low-cost strategy that can provide food for animals during the dry period of the year, a time characterized by scarcity of forage. Thus, the objective of the present work was to determine the effect of the deferral period and nitrogen sources on losses due to ammonia volatilization, productivity and nutritional value of Urochloa brizantha cv. Piatã in the Northeast Paraense mesoregion. The field experiment was conducted in the municipality of Igarapé-Açu-PA (Northeast Paraense mesoregion). The predominant climate, according to the Köppen classification, is Am type. Two distinct experiments were carried out, consisting of a randomized block design (DBC) in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement, with 4 replications (n=24 experimental units). Two deferring periods (60 and 90 days) were evaluated, and two sources of nitrogen fertilizer plus the control treatment (without fertilizer) applied at the beginning of the deferral. The sources were urea - 46.00.00 and ammonium nitrate (YARABELA® - 27.00.00 4Ca 2Mg). For the first experiment, a concentration of 50 Kg of N.ha-1 was used, and in the second, 100 Kg of N.ha-1. The experimental units were composed of plots of Urochloa brizantha cv. Piatã, measuring 4.0 × 3.0 m (12 m2). The following evaluations were carried out: Morphogenic characteristics (morphogenesis), Structural characteristics (pasture height, extended plant and plant tipping index; tiller population density and demographic pattern), productive characteristics (productivity and morphological separation of tillers), Nutritive value (chemical composition and in vitro digestibility) and ammonia volatilization. The data were submitted to verification of the assumptions of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and submitted to it, considering in the statistical model the fixed effects of the deferral period (PD), source of nitrogen fertilizer (NF) and the interaction PD × FN, the random block effects and experimental error. Means were compared using Tukey's test and the interaction breakdown was performed using the slice procedure of the SAS software (version 9.1). For all statistical procedures, α= 0.05 was considered as the critical level of probability for type I error.
