SUMMARY:

Paratuberculosis is an infectious, chronic disease with worldwide distribution, caused by Mycobacterium avium sp. paratuberculosis (Map), which affects all domestic and wild species of ruminants, but also affects a wide variety of non-ruminant species, in humans is associated with Crohn's disease, making this pathogen a public health risk. Biological characteristics make Map highly resistant to adverse environmental conditions. Infection is caused by ingestion of colostrum, milk or water contaminated with feces that contain the microorganism. This infection occurs in the first months of life. Clinical signs appear in adult animals between 2 and 5 years old, with profuse diarrhea, weight loss due to malabsorption, dehydration, cachexia and death. The first record of paratuberculosis in cattle in the country was made by Dupont in 1915, in Rio de Janeiro. Map is an intracellular pathogen first generating a cellular immune response and as the infection progresses the immune response shifts to a non-protective humoral immune response. Malabsorption syndrome caused by lesions in the intestine due to Map infection is associated with a decrease in milk production and changes in milk quality, as well as an increase in somatic cells, being a disease with an important economic impact within livestock. All research describing the immune response to Map infection has been described in cows, goats and sheep, but there is no information on this response in buffaloes in Brazil. In addition to the buffalo breeding system in the state of Pará, there are ponds to maintain animal welfare, which could contribute to the spread and maintenance of the infection within the herds. immune response in buffaloes infected with Map using a diagnostic test that measures cellular and humoral immune response as well as specific markers for both responses such as IFN gamma, IL-10, Nramp1 and iNOS, in addition to evaluating the quality of milk from infected animals in order to have greater knowledge, which allows designing new strategies to control the disease to reduce economic losses in milk production in buffalo livestock.
