RESUMO:

Research with the aim of evaluating the use of alternative foods with a source of roughage in feedlots of beef cattle is an important strategy to reduce costs and labor with the production of traditional roughages (for example, silages). In addition, the use of these by-products of the industry in animal feed can contribute to the reduction of the environmental liabilities that are generated when these residues do not have an adequate destination. Thus, two experiments were carried out at the Federal Rural University of Amazon, which gave rise to the present thesis, with the objective of verifying the possibility of using açaí seed as a source of volume in the diets of confined beef cattle. The first experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of two methods of supplying açaí seed (AS) as a source of fiber (coarse or whole) for feedlot beef cattle on intake, digestibility and rumen parameters. For this purpose, a trial was carried out with 4 rumen-fisted bulls, male, not castrated, crossbred Nelore, with an average body weight of 340 ± 31 kg, distributed in two simultaneous 2 × 2 Latin squares. The consumption of dry matter (DM), crude protein and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) was higher with the coarsely broken açaí. The digestibility of DM and nutrients was not affected. Acetate and total volatile fatty acid concentrations and the acetate:propionate ratio were higher in the treatment with coarsely broken açaí, while the pH was higher with the diet with whole açaí seed. From the first experiment originated the first chapter of this thesis. The second experiment was carried out to evaluate different levels of açaí seed inclusion (0; 5; 10; 15 and 20%) in the diet of feedlot beef cattle on consumption, digestion, ruminal degradation kinetics and fiber passage and efficiency. of nitrogen utilization in confined beef cattle. Five male, non-castrated, cross-bred Nelore cattle were used, distributed in a 5 x 5 Latin square. Higher consumption of DM, MO, CP and starch was observed for treatments without inclusion (0%) and with higher levels of inclusion (20%) of açaí seeds in the diet. NDF digestibility reduced linearly with the inclusion of açaí seed. There was selection against NDF for treatments 0 and 20% inclusion. Likewise, the pH, ammoniacal nitrogen, nitrogen consumption and excretion in the feces were higher for these treatments.
