SUMMARY:

Choloepus didactylus is a mammal belonging to the superorder Xenarthra, which can be found in the Amazon Biome in Brazil and in some Latin American countries. Little is known about the morphological characteristics of the species and its implications in the medical and surgical clinic. Therefore, in order to determine the arteries that irrigate the main thoracic, abdominal organs and assist in the clinical-surgical management of the species, a macroscopic morphological description of the aortic and macro and microscopic branches of the Rete mirabile of the locomotor limbs of Choloepus didactylus was performed. For this, six specimens were used, five females and one male, four adults and two pups, which had dissected arteries, contrasted with outbook and photomacrographed; in addition, fragments of the network were sent for routine histological analysis and scanning electron microscopy. A type of branching of the thoracic aorta, four different types of branches of the cranial abdominal aorta were found and in the locomotor limbs network were identified the non-mixture of venous and arterial blood responsible for thermal exchange, important for postural maintenance of these animals. The identification of aortic branches and rete mirabile of locomotor limbs, besides allowing the identification of anatomical variations in this species, becomes an important aid in clinical and surgical procedures in the routine of veterinarians of wild animals.
