The paca (Cuniculus paca) is the second largest rodent and widely distributed in the neotropical countries. It is a precocious species, generating newborns with low dependence on parental care. Although the ultrasound examination is the best tool for the diagnosis of early gestation in this species, there is still no information on bone development through this technique. The objective of this study was to describe the development of the fetal skeleton of the paca and to relate the data obtained with their adaptive strategies. 102 embryos / fetuses from subsistence hunting were sonographed. External biometry of the animals was performed to obtain body mass, caudal cranial length (CRL), total dorsal length (TDL), associating these variables with fetal age. Ultrasonographic examinations of the axial and appendicular skeleton of the fetuses were performed. The data were evaluated through linear and non-linear logistic regressions using CurveExpert Professional software 2.4. The fetal age formula was ∛ W = 0.082 (t - 37.25), strongly associated with CRL and TDL. However, TDL was the main parameter used for association with gestational age. The mean ± SD of embryo / fetal TDL was 19.36 ± 8.40 cm (range: 1.40-35.92 cm). Skull ossification occurred from 4.10 cm TDL (43.44 gestation days); all vertebrae were completely ossified at 12.80 cm (76.64 gestation days). The thoracic limbs were ossified with 16.5cm (89.70 days gestation), including all phalanges of the thoracic and pelvic limbs. The pelvis was complete from 16 cm (84.23 gestation days). With 20.2 cm (110.68 gestation days) the pelvic limb was already formed, from that age all the fetuses have the axial and appendicular skeletons with complete ossification.
