SUMMARY:

The Sotalia guianensis is a small cetacean with coastal habits, distributed from Honduras in Central America to Santa Catarina in Southern Brazil. Its main threat is capture in fishing nets. Fishing activity is very intense throughout the coastal region of the state of Pará, which could potentially cause serious impacts on S. guianensis populations. A systematic periodic monitoring program is being carried out on beaches of the eastern coast of Marajó Island and the Algodoal-Maiandeua APA (Environmental Protection Area), focusing on cetacean strandings in the state of Pará. The objective of this study is to describe the profiles of S. guianensis specimens involved in mortality events through the analysis of stranding records on the coast of the Marajó municipalities of Salvaterra and Soure, and the Algodoal-Maiandeua APA in the state of Pará. Monitoring was carried out from July to December 2024 by a team of three researchers who traveled on foot, actively searching for carcasses of S. guianensis, regardless of the state of conservation of the individual's carcass. Among the information of interest for this study are the frequency of stranding occurrences, spatial and temporal distribution, data on the specimens such as sex, degree of development, body size, state of decomposition, and when possible, the recording of marks suggestive of anthropogenic interaction. As a result, 42 strandings of S. guianensis were recorded during beach monitoring in the study area. The majority of the individuals found were juveniles, with few adults, and it was not possible to determine the cause of the strandings due to the advanced stage of decomposition of the carcasses. The beach monitoring records showed that the advanced state of decomposition of the carcasses makes it difficult to assess and identify the cause of death of the S. guianensis specimens found stranded. However, in the municipalities of Salvaterra and Soure, and in the Algodoal-Maiandeua APA in Pará, the main economic activity is artisanal fishing, which uses fishing gear such as gillnets, and these are recognized as one of the main factors leading to the mortality of S. guianensis through accidental capture.
