SUMMARY:

The well-being of the oral cavity is an essential condition for the maintenance of the health of domestic and wild animals, in such a way that studies have been developed to contribute significantly to the management and quality of life in the environment of captivity. In this context, the locoregional block is the most common anesthetic strategy used in animal dental routines, highlighting the need for anesthetic methodologies based on species-specific morphology. The objective was to describe the topography and morphometry of the infraorbital, mandibular and mental foramina of Eira barbara (irara), correlating with anatomical landmarks in the syncranium, aiming at a more effective local anesthetic blockade in this species. Four syncraniums were used, measured in each antimere (n=8). The infraorbital foramen was located on the lateral surface of the skull, rostrally to the eye socket. For the intraoral technique of infraorbital nerve block, it is suggested that the needle be introduced into the oral vestibule, close to the lateral face of the alveolar border of the maxillary bone, in a vertical direction (perpendicular and in a ventrodorsal direction, from its alveolar margin), using the diastema as an anatomical reference existing between the 2nd premolar and 1st molar, advancing approximately 3.6 mm in both antimeres of the skull, up to the ventral border of the infraorbital foramen. There was no significant difference when comparing measurements between right and left antimeres. The mandibular foramen was located on the medial aspect of the ramus of the mandible, ventrally to the point of insertion of the temporal muscle, serving as a caudal opening for the mandibular canal. The prominent palpable landmarks for the technique of local anesthetic block of the inferior alveolar nerve were the angular process and the ventral border of the mandible. Based on the measurements, so far it is suggested that the needle be introduced obliquely 14.12±1.05 mm, from the angular process and perpendicularly 4.25±1.26, from the ventral edge of the mandible. barbaria threshing floor, recording a mean value of 2.87±0.5, with no difference between the antimeres. The caudal third of the ventral margin of the body of the mandible exhibited a non-articular depression, which coincided with the mandibular foramen in the transverse plane. None of the 16 measures evaluated showed variation between antimeres according to the t-test at a 5% significance level.
