SUMMARY:

The amount of organic carbon, existing in forests, has been the focus of worldwide attention for the Amazon forest, since the maintenance of green areas, results in the storage of fixed carbon, which is no longer released into the atmosphere. Scientific information indicates that the chemical structure of the wood of trees is formed by 50% of carbon, therefore, the trees are one of the main elements responsible for the stock of C. On the other hand, more detailed information about the amount of carbon stored in the wood, either by species or groups of species, is scarce. However, this is an extremely important information to ensure the sustainability of activities involving the harvest of wood from forests. In this context, the objective of this research is to determine the carbon stock (C) for the wood of twelve species harvested in forest management plans in the State of Pará, providing more detailed information that can contribute to this gap in the literature. The species included in the study were selected based on the analysis of data available in the Authorization for Forest Exploitation (AUTEF) of a Forest Management Unit under a forest concession contract, in the Paru State Forest, Pará State. The 12 species with the highest values of volume harvested for commercial purposes in the last 3 years were included. For each species, three (3) trees were selected, with a diameter at breast height of 50-150 cm, totaling 36 trees (12 species x 3 trees). From each tree, after being cut down, 10 cm thick discs were obtained in the field at the base of the tree (0%). The discs were taken to the Tree Taxonomy laboratory of the Federal Rural University of the Amazon for analysis. From each disc two opposite wedges were removed, one to determine the basic density and the other for the carbon content. The wood basic density data were tested for normality and homoscedasticity of variance by the Shapiro-Wilk and Bartlett tests, respectively, both at 5% error probability level. The non-parametric Kruskall-Wallis test (p < 0.05) was used to verify the existence of a difference between the basic density of the species. It is expected that the determination of the basic density of the twelve species studied, in order to obtain convenient values with the bibliographic information, in a way that this will subsidize the study of carbon stocks. It is believed that the percentage of carbon stored between the heartwood, sapwood and bark of the species studied present different values.
