RESUMO:

Charcoal is one of the products derived from wood that occupies a prominent position mainly in the generation of energy due to the renewable character of the raw material and the low emission of pollutants when compared to the use of fossil fuels. In Brazil, the charcoal production process is mostly performed in brick kilns. The charcoal production has several stages that are carried out in an orderly manner, they are: loading and closing the kiln, ignition, carbonization and cooling. Generally, the kiln cooling step is done by the natural cooling method that can last up to twice the carbonization time. Many advances have been made in the production process, such as burning carbonization gases, kiln automation, metal kilns, and cooling with heat exchangers. However, these technologies are available to a few or are relatively expensive. And, regardless of the technology to be implemented in carbonization, the costs of implementation must be considered, such as operational investments, installation, maintenance, legalized raw material, and be economically viable. There is no doubt that it is necessary to improve the charcoal production process in brick kilns. In this context, this research aims to analyze the economic viability and quality of charcoal for domestic use produced in brick kilns of the hot tail type with and without forced water cooling. This research will be carried out at the kilns of the company Carvão Fênix. The collection area is located in the municipality of Benevides, state of Pará. The kilns have a capacity of 21.46 m³. Its walls are built and lined with mortar composed of cement, white sand and clay in equal proportions. For the cooling of the kilns, a rotating irrigation nozzle adapted to the top of the oven dome on the outside will be used. There will be 10 carbonizations, 5 with forced cooling and 5 controls, without cooling. The properties of wood from sawmill wastes and the charcoal produced will be analyzed. The internal temperature of the oven will be monitored for the formulation of the thermal profile of carbonizations. The carbonization yields of two treatments will be compared. Finally, an analysis of the economic viability of the production of charcoal with and without forced cooling will be carried out in masonry ovens type hot-tail.
