SUMMARY:

Coarse woody residues (diameter > 10 cm) are defined as all dead and fallen material on the forest floor, with a diameter greater than 10 cm. In managed forest areas, parts of harvested trees not removed from the forest are also included, such as antlers, bifurcations, buttresses, in addition to tortuous parts of trunks and branches. In this context, the use of residues for energy purposes, sawmills, charcoal and furniture production can be an alternative to optimize forestry production. The use depends on variables such as the degree of decomposition and diametric class. The estimation of the volume of this material is important for decision-making about its viability and can be performed by several methods, with a low cost and good precision alternative being the intercepting lines method, which can form different layouts in the field, although it is necessary to define the most efficient format. In this sense, the guiding questions were: a) Is there a difference between the layouts for estimating the volume of coarse woody residues?; b) Does the length of the sample line influence the determination of coarse woody residues between the layouts?; c) Do the layouts have the same diametric distribution for the volume of woody residues?; d) Do the layouts differ in terms of estimating the volume of waste by decomposition class? and e) What are the most frequent usage classes among the layouts? Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate and define the most appropriate layout for estimating the volume of waste generated by reduced impact exploration in the municipality of Porto de Moz, state of Pará, Amazon. Lines of 1000 m were sampled in an area of 100 hectares, where all pieces with a diameter equal to or greater than 10 cm that touched the sample lines were catalogued. Each tested layout (Cross, L, Line and Square formats) was characterized as a treatment, with 18 repetitions in a completely randomized design. In addition, in each layout, the volume of waste was evaluated by category of use (coal/firewood, small furniture/artifacts, sawmill and unused), decomposition class (no perceptible degradation, slight signs of deterioration and advanced stage of decomposition ) and diameter class. A regression between estimated volume and sample line length was also performed, which showed better sampling with increasing line length. The results indicated the similarity between the layouts for volume estimation (p > 0.05), according to Tukey's test, in addition to a very high coefficient of variation. Despite this, the layouts L (9.30%) Square (9.69%) had the lowest standard errors. In all layouts, the distance showed positive and significant regression for volume estimation, in addition, the largest volumes were found in intermediate diameter classes, with emphasis on the class between 93.18 and 123.18 cm. The layouts were similar in estimating the volume by decomposition classes and in all, the use for the production of small furniture/artifacts was the most recurrent, with more than 50% of the volume. Therefore, considering the smaller sampling error, the greater range of diametric classes and the ease of execution in the field, the use of the square type layout is recommended.
