SUMMARY:

The production and marketing of the açaí fruit have significantly contributed to the agro-industrial development of the Amazon region. However, such progress has caused the exponential generation of post-processing wastes, which are improperly disposed in the environment. Studies on the production of bioenergy with these wastes have shown promising results. However, inadequate storage is one of the main limitations for this purpose, requiring more detailed investigation about the depreciation of açaí waste energy properties. Therefore, this work aimed to analyze the environmental and storage time effects on the modification degree of the energetic properties of the açaí waste in a bioassay. Approximately 20 kg of freshly processed açaí waste were collected in a mixer located in Belém-PA. The seeds were stored under three conditions: immersed in deionized water, on the ground, and in plastic bags, kept in a covered greenhouse for nine months. The physical and proximate analyses were carried out for the fresh waste at time 0 (zero) and after 30, 60, 180, and 270 days of storage. Soil and plastic bag storage caused a decrease in moisture content, while water storage increased this property compared to fresh waste. There was also a reduction in the density of the waste stored in water and plastic bags after 30 days. For the waste stored in the soil, this property decreased up to 180 days, increasing again after 270 days of storage. Fixed carbon and ash contents increased while volatile material contents proportionally decreased for the three conditions concerning the fresh waste. Storage in water was the one that most depreciated the energy properties of the açaí waste. Soil and plastic bag storage are beneficial in increasing fixed carbon content and decreasing moisture but adversely affect ash content and waste density.
