RESUMO:

Logging, although well planned, causes damage to the remaining trees and may lead to the mortality of some of them. Understanding the circumstances that influence tree mortality can become a tool to help minimize this impact and contribute to the sustainability of forest management. In this paper two scientific questions were raised: what is the impact of logging on the mortality of the remaining trees that suffered direct damage from this activity? The mortality of trees that suffered direct damage is expected to differ from those not affected by logging. The second question posed was: How does the type and severity of damage influence the survival of a damaged tree? It is expected that there is a difference in mortality from these two factors. In this context, this paper aims to evaluate and quantify the impact of logging on the remaining trees, to verify if there is a difference between the mortality of damaged and undamaged trees and to estimate the average survival probability of individuals damaged by logging. The study was conducted at Fazenda Rio Capim, where 18 plots of 1 ha each were installed and inventories were made 100% of commercial trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 20 cm. Trees with 10 cm≤DAP <20cm were measured in two contiguous 25m x 25m subplots randomly chosen within each plot. The survey was conducted in eight inventories, started in 2004, two of them in the year of logging (one before and one immediately after that event) and the other every two years until 2016. The mortality dynamics of the remaining commercial species will be reported, with and without logging damage. A logistic regression will be tested, to verify the influence of logging damage and structural characteristics on tree survival. This work is expected to generate knowledge on the dynamics of mortality of remaining trees damaged and undamaged by logging, thus qualifying the discussion around the sustainability of forest management.
