RESUMO:

In order to increase the knowledge about the density and anatomy of wood, in this context this work aims to determine the density of wood of S. parahyba var. amazonicum and S. parahyba var. parahyba from plantations located in the municipality of Mojú, Pará. This study also aimed to anatomically characterize the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the wood, to analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the varieties, as well as to correlate the density with the anatomical characters. From these objectives, the present work had as hypothesis: there is variation of the wood density of the two varieties associated with the anatomical structures. For the anatomical studies, the standards of the Pan American Commission of Technical Norms - COPANT (1974) and International Association of Wood Anatomists Committee (IAWA) (1989), as well as ABNT NBR 11941 (BRAZILIAN ASSOCIATION OF TECHNICAL STANDARDS - ABNT, 2003) for physical analysis. In spite of the great use of this species, studies related to the knowledge of the anatomical variability of the wood and its relation with the density are necessary to extend its knowledge to meet the existing production systems in the State of Pará, through the identification and selection of productive origins, well suited to different environmental conditions and which can serve a variety of purposes, such as applications in agroforestry systems.
