SUMMARY:

Environmental contamination by heavy metals has been associated, especially, with the intense industrial and agricultural activity that in the long run may be irreversible. Chromium (Cr) is found in all phases in the environment, including air, water and soil, and its various chemical forms are pollutants with serious implications for the environment and human health. Recently, several studies have shown that, in plants, selenium exhibited protective effects against toxic elements such as cadmium, arsenic, lead, antimony, mercury and copper. Paricá (S. parayba var. Amazonicum) are indicated for plantations and agroforestry systems, with potential for the rehabilitation of degraded areas due to their rapid growth and production and seed dispersal capacity, being important in the secondary succession of the tropical rain forest. The objective of the research was to evaluate the effects of the doses of CrCl3 and NaSeO4 on germination, growth and biochemical metabolism in seedlings of paricá. The experiment had treatments of Cr: 0, 80, 160, 240 µM and Se: 0, 5, 10, 15 µM concentrations. The experimental design used was a completely randomized, factorial 4x4 with four replications, totaling 64 experimental units and 16 treatments. The seeds used were the seeds supplied by Embrapa, and seeds of paricá (Schizolobium parauba var. Amazonicum Huber ex Ducke) were used. The normality test used was the Shapiro-Wilk test and for the homogeneity test the Levene test was used, both at (p ≤ 0.05). The data were subjected to analysis of variance by the F test (p ≤ 0.05) and for results of the interaction between concentrations, polynomial regression analysis was performed, adjusted by polynomial regression equations (p ≤ 0.05). The concentrations of Cr and Se did not affect the germinative process of paricá seeds. The increase in Se 5 µM, 10 µM and 15 µM concentrations had a negative effect on root length and root dry matter. Together with Cr, Se affected the growth in height of paricá seedlings. The activities of glycine betaine in the leaves and roots were affected between the concentrations of Cr 160 and 240 µM and Se 10 and 15 µM and proline in the roots were affected between the concentrations of Cr 0, 80 and 160 µM and Se 0 and 5 µM. The Se did not promote satisfactory responses as a stress reliever for metals, as it proved harmful for the growth of paricá seedlings.
