RESUMO:
  1. Considering the scarcity of scientific research aimed at the production of firewood and charcoal from the residue of the sustainable forest logging, it is necessary to provide information of the wood properties of these biomasses, in order to qualify them for the energetic use in Amazon, and to propose alternative criteria of grouping of these residues that maximize the carbonization yields. Thus, this study aimed to contribute for the energetic valorization of forest residues from sustainable management for bioenergy generation. The residues were collected three days after the logging at the Fazenda Rio Capim Management Unit in Paragominas, Pará. Three trees of twenty species of the Brazilian Amazon were randomly sampled. In each tree, three wood discs were collected from the base of the larger diameter branches to support the identification in the woodgallery of the Botany Laboratory of Embrapa Amazônia Oriental, the wood analyzes and carbonizations in laboratory scale. In addition, botanical material was collected from one tree per species in order to identify and incorporate in the collections of the herbariums IAN and Felisberto Camargo. The basic density, the chemical properties (ultimate, proximate and molecular composition) and the higher heating value of the wood, as well as the yields and specific consumption of the charcoal produced in the laboratory will be investigated in the first stage of the research aiming at the multivariate grouping of the wood residues. The main biomass quality indices associated with thermal energy generation and charcoal production will also be identified. The second stage will be conducted at the Rio Capim Charcoal Production Unit, where the residue management groups defined in the first stage of the research will be carbonized. The carbonization yields and the bulk density of the charcoal produced will be quantified. Of the 20 species studied, 11 presented moderate basic density (55%), and 9, density classified as heavy (45%). The denser species (Manilkara elata, Dinizia excelsa, Enterolobium schomburgkii and Licania canescens) presented the lowest values for the maximum moisture content of the wood (46.8%, 47.5%, 55.2% and 56.4%). It is hoped that this research will prove the energy viability of forest residues from sustainable forest management. Associated with this, there will be an evaluation of the energy quality of the wood residues as well as of the charcoal produced and, from this, it will be possible to propose alternatives to maximize the sustainable energetic use of forest resources. From the technological study of the residual forest biomass it is hoped to increase the yield of the carbonization process, reduce the emissions of gases during this thermochemical process, improve the thermal efficiency of the conversion and thus produce charcoal in a sustainable way and in adequate quantity to the industrial and domestic sectors of the Legal Amazon.
