SUMMARY:

Riparian forests play a vital role in maintaining both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems by providing essential ecosystem services, particularly carbon sequestration. Due to increasing anthropogenic pressures on these environments, it is crucial to understand the mechanisms that influence their capacity to store carbon. In this context, this dissertation investigates the key factors driving the variability of carbon stocks in riparian forests. Structured into four chapters, the research combines a global synthesis of carbon stock data with field-based approaches. Of these chapters, the first two have already been submitted to international journals, while the remaining two are currently under development. The first chapter presents a global bibliometric analysis of carbon stocks in riparian forests, highlighting the relationship between scientific output on the topic and socioeconomic variables. The second chapter examines the forest structure, species diversity, and floristic composition in areas surrounding an industrial alumina refinery complex in the Brazilian Amazon. The third chapter aims to develop allometric models for estimating aboveground biomass of riparian forest species in the Amazon, and to evaluate their predictive performance in comparison with the widely used Pantropical equation by Chave et al. Finally, the fourth chapter will integrate environmental, structural, and geospatial data to map aboveground biomass distribution patterns according to land-use types in the municipality of Barcarena, identifying priority areas and the influence of factors such as topography and climate. The findings of this dissertation will provide a scientific basis for understanding how land-use practices affect the carbon storage potential of riparian forests, reinforcing the importance of conservation strategies aimed at climate change mitigation. Furthermore, the results will offer practical insights into the development of environmental management plans, ecological restoration efforts, and public policies focused on sustainability in regions impacted by industrial activities.
