SUMMARY:

Botanical identification is fundamental to the sustainability of forest management plans, particularly in regions of high biodiversity such as the state of Mato Grosso, in the Amazon. This study evaluated the quality of botanical identification in trees producing commercialized wood, focusing on active forest management plans. The project is being developed in the State of Mato Grosso, in areas of companies associated with the Center for Wood-Producing and Exporting Industries of the State of Mato Grosso (CIPEM), through the Most Commercialized Tree Species Project in the State of Mato Grosso (PROPED/ UFRA-PVAG906-2024) with active Forest Management Plans and licensed by the State environmental agency. The 50 common names with the largest volumes of wood sold by the state were selected and, for these names, botanical collections of at least 10 trees were carried out in each area, seeking to cover all regions with forests in the State. Field collection campaigns are organized to coincide with the harvest period by companies to facilitate collection logistics. The collected botanical and wood samples are taken to the Herbarium Meridional da Amazônia (HERBAM), at the State University of Mato Grosso, Alta Floresta campus for treatment and herborization, then they are registered in JABOT to generate labels with the information collected in the field and subjected to botanical determination of the species. Field data is consolidated into electronic spreadsheets and analyzed when using scientific names in management and post-identification plans. For the analyses, programs such as R and Excel will be used, allowing the organization and interpretation of the collected data. To date, 202 botanical samples have been collected distributed across six municipalities: Alta Floresta, Cotriguaçú, Nova Monte Verde, Nova Ubiratã, Santa Carmem and Sinop. The samples collected are named in 43 popular names, of which 102 samples have already been determined by group experts and the rest are in the process of identification. An initial analysis revealed frequent inconsistencies between popular and scientific names, with cases of multiple common names associated with the same species and the same common name representing different scientific species. Species such as Trattinnickia burseraefolia (amescla/bat) and Qualea dinizii (cambará). Inaccuracy in botanical identification can compromise sustainable forest management, impacting both biodiversity conservation and the forest economy. This work reinforces the importance of standardizing taxonomic methods, strengthening regional botanical collections and training professionals involved in forest inventories. The contribution of this study is reflected in the generation of applied knowledge, which supports the responsible management of forest resources in the state of Mato Grosso, promoting sustainable exploration practices aligned with environmental conservation.
