SUMMARY:

Mendoncia is a genus of Acanthaceae that belongs to the subfamily Thunbergioideae, comprising approximately 90 species occurring in tropical regions of the old and new world. The neotropical region is the most diverse in number of species (c. 80) ranging from southeastern Mexico to Bolivia and Brazil, ocurring mainly in humid forests, with the Amazon ast the largest center of diversity of the genus (c. 50 species). Representatives of Mendoncia are recognized for their a unique set of characters among the Acanthaceae: slender vines or, more rarely, lianas with a pair of well-developed bracteoles that partially cover the corolla and fruits, usually reduced calyx, pollen grains spherical, (4-)5(-6) brevicolporate, the corolla varies from red, violet, white or cream coloured, sometimes with spots witin the upper part of the tube and drupaceous fruits. Phylogenetic studies indicate the subfamily Thunbergioideae and Mendoncia are monophyletic groups however there are no taxonomic reviews including all neotropical taxa of Mendoncia. The paleotropical species were reviewed recently. In the New World, the genus was only featured in general flora treatments for the Acanthaceae family or in country based revisions. The present work is justified due to the delimitation problems between morphologically similar species, numerous undetermined specimens found in herbaria worldwide, incertae sedis taxa, vast synonymy with poorly substantiated typification, in addition to few recent collections deposited in Amazonian herbaria. The review is being carried out by consulting the specialized literature of Mendoncia, mainly the study of the protologues and also other relevant Acanthaceae literature. Specimens will be analysed using herbarium material deposited in numerous collections in South America, North America and Europe, giving priority to the detailed study of nomenclatural types. Field expeditions have been carried out since 2019 and, in addition, this study aims to investigate anatomical characters to assist in the species delimitation. At the end of this study the species delimitation of Neotropical Mendoncia will be improved, with the discovery of nomenclature novelties, new occurrence records, new synonyms, new combinations and probably new species, expanding the knowledge of neotropical Mendoncia species, in addition to increasing and improving the quality of the collections of herbaria studied. The circumscription of Mendoncia species, together with a better understanding of the geographic distribution of the taxa studied will make it possible to carry out assessments of their conservation status.
