"Secretory structures in Polygala timoutou Aubl.(Polygalaceae)"
Fabales. Anatomy. Croceous glands.
Polygalaceae belongs to the order Fabales, isconsideredmonophyletic based on its morphology and molecular data, has a cosmopolitan distribution and housesabout 1,200 species distributed in 27 genera, in Brazil there are 11 genera and 207 species of which 130 are consideredendemic.Among the generaPolygala L. isconstitutedby species with relevant medicinal value, due to its phytotherapeuticpotential, it is the mostrepresentative with ca. of 580 species of which 120 are registered for Brazil, it comprisestwosubgeneraPolygala and Chodatia Paiva, its subgeneric classification is based on phylogenetic studieswherePolygalaisdividedinto 14 sections. Of the Polygalasections, the Timutuasectionischaracterizedby the presence of visible/croceous glands, archedstyletterminatedby an obliquelycymbiformprestigmaticcavity, a posterior end with a conspicuouslycrestedappendix with abundant (sometimesabsent) trichomes, a stigma anterior globose, crestedkeelpetal and persistentchalice in the fruit. The visible/croceous glands are used in the delimitation of Timutua, however, theylack more complete informationabout its nature, detailedanatomicalstudiescanproduce new interpretationsabout the croceous glands, with comprehensiveinformationabout the origin, structure, type of secretedsubstancethrough the glands between the floral pieces and in the different species, allowing to relate suchstructures to a possible function. Thus, the presentstudyaims to investigate the origin, structure and function of the croceous glands existing in the floral structures, fruit, leafblades and stem of Polygala timoutou Aubl., providingmorphoanatomicalinformationrelevant to Polygalaceae. Samples of flowers, fruit, leafblades and stem of P. timoutou Aubl. atdifferentstages of development, whichshouldbeobtained from fieldcollection and removal of herborized material.Herbarium samples willberehydrated and stored in 70% ethanol, whilecollected samples willbefixed in FAA50, observations and photographicdocumentationwillbecarried out with a light microscopeequipped with a digital camera, macro-imageswillbeobtained using a stereomicroscope with a digital cameraattached. Histochemicaltestswillbecarried out for lipophilichydrophilicsubstances, the control of the testswillbecarried out according to the techniquesalreadydescribed for each test. The samples willbeexamined and photographedatdifferentmagnifications, with an acceleratingvoltage of 15 kV, in the ScanningElectronMicroscopyLaboratory of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Thus, it isintended to publisharticles in national and internationalscientificjournalsrecommended for the field of Botany, estimatingthat the resultsobtainedsupportotherresearch in anatomy, taxonomy, ecology, phylogeny, amongothers.
