"Phyllanthus L. (Phyllanthaceae) in Brazilian Amazon"

KEY WORDS:

Phyllanthus L. (Phyllanthaceae) in Brazilian Amazon

PAGES: 20
BIG AREA: Ciências Biológicas
AREA: Botânica
SUMMARY:

Phyllanthaceae Martynov has recently been recognized as a family, including many of the Euphorbiaceae-Phyllanthoideae. They are characterized by unisexual flowers, 3-carpellary ovary, with two ovules in each locule, and bifid styles. It has approximately 60 genera and 2000 species with pantropical distribution. In Brazil, it is represented by 15 genera and 131 species, distributed across all phytogeographic domains. In the Amazon, there is still a gap in the taxonomic knowledge of this family, with Phyllanthus L. being an example of the genus, whose species have not yet received an updated treatment. This genus consists of several indeterminate or unsatisfactory identified samples in the collections of herbaria, therefore, it is desirable to continue studies on species occurring in the region. In view of the above, a taxonomic study of Phyllanthus species that occur in the Brazilian Amazon is proposed, updating their identifications, descriptions, nomenclature and geographical distribution. For this, collections will be consulted, in person or digitalized collections, of national and international herbaria: IAN, INPA, HAMAB, HRB, MG, MICH, MIRR, NY, R, RB, RON, SP, UEFS, UFAC, UFGO and UFMT, including types and types photographs, as well as samples of some specimens collected in the field. The study methods will be those traditionally used in plant taxonomy works, consisting of dissection, morphological analysis and description of the samples with the aid of a stereoscopic microscope. In a previous survey, 34 species of Phyllanthus with occurrence in the Brazilian Amazon were detected, namely: Phyllanthus acuminatus Vahl, P. amarus Schumach. & Tonn., P. aracaensis GLWebster ex Secco & A. Rosário, P. atabapoensis Jabl., P. attenuatus Miq., P. biantherifer Croizat, P. brasiliensis, P. caribaeus Urb., P. caroliniensis Walter, P. chacoensis Morong, P. fluitans Benth. ex Müll. Arg., P. graveolens Kunth, P. hyssopifolioides Kunth, P. jablonskianus Steyerm. & Luteyn, P. juglandifolius Willd., P. madeirensis Croizat, P. majus Steyerm., P. martii Müll. Arg., P. microphyllus Kunth, P. minutulus Müll. Arg., P. myrsinites Kunth, P. neblinae Jabl., P. niruri L., P. orbiculatus Rich., P. poeppigianus (Müll. Arg.) Müll., P. puntii G.L.Webster, P. racemiger Müll. Arg, P. rupestris Kunth, P. spruceanus Müll. Arg., P. stipulatus (Raf.) G.L.Webster, P. subapicalis Jabl., P. tenellus Roxb., P. urinaria L. and P. vacciniifolius (Müll. Arg.) Müll. Arg. An updated list of taxa occurring in the Amazon will be presented, as well as an identification key, taxonomic comments, maps and illustrations of the species.
