Floristic composition of vascular epiphytes on chestnut (Bertholletia excelsa Bonpl.) in the Extractive Reserve Ipaú-Anilzinho, Pará.

SUMMARY:

Studies on the importance of epiphytes for biodiversity in tropical and temperate forests are recent. Epiphytes correspond to about 10% of the vascular plants recorded for Brazil. Until then, only 13 published works of epiphytic sinuses have been registered for the Brazilian Amazon, mostly punctual studies, addressing only one family. The canopy of a tropical forest is considered “the last biotic frontier”, but the difficulties of access to this region is one of the factors that contribute to the lack of volume and breadth of studies. In this context, the aim of this study is to carry out a floristic survey of the vascular epiphytes present in the chestnut tree (Bertholletia excelsa Bonpl.), species whose seed is the second most important non-timber forest product in the northern region of the country. The research will be carried out in the chestnut area of Carará, one of the most expressive of the Extractive Reserve Ipaú-Anilzinho, district of Baião, Pará. In addition to the 50 chestnut trees randomly selected in the chestnut area, to better estimate the floristics and the epiphytic diversity present in the chestnut trees, another 50 phorophytes will also be analyzed, with DBH 35-70 cm and height lower than that of chestnut trees. Considering the size and age of the chestnut trees, it is hypothesized that the greatest diversity of vascular epiphytes will be found on the chestnut trees, among the analyzed phorophytes, and in the canopy region. It is also assumed that there is a low specificity between epiphytes and phorophytes and that the most representative families in the area are Araceae, Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae and Polypodiaceae. During a previous incursion to the chestnut area, 130 chestnut trees were georeferenced, usually with DBH <70 cm and with ca. 45 m high. Three families and eight genera of vascular epiphytes were also visually identified, of these, five were on chestnut trees and the others on other phorophytes with characteristics that fit the research.
