TITLE:

"Cyperaceae Juss. in Serra do Cachimbo, Pará, Brazil"

KEY WORDS:

Amazon, Cerrado, Cyperoideae, Ecotone, Taxonomy.

PAGES: 30
BIG AREA: Ciências Biológicas
AREA: Botânica
SUMMARY:

Cyperaceae is a cosmopolitan botanical family, presenting high diversity of species in tropical and subtropical regions of the planet. It has 5.695 species, distributed in 98 genera and inhabits almost all terrestrial and aquatic environments, being commonly found in open and palustrial environments. Its species act directly in the balance of these ecosystems, participating mainly in the control of eutrophication and purification of water. In Brazil, they are present in all phytogeographic domains, with approximately 50% of the species occurring in the Amazon. Despite containing the largest tropical forest in the world, the Amazon is home to many non-forest formations, such as savannas, rupestrian fields, campinaranas and campinas, which are usually characterized by Cyperaceae predominance. Serra do Cachimbo, located in the south of Pará state and north of Mato Grosso state, is between the Amazon-Cerrado transition. This ecotone is marked by open plant formations, showing potential for high richness and endemism of Cyperaceae. However, there are no studies focused on the family for the region and few specimens are deposited in herbarium collections. At the same time, the region is located in the “arc of deforestation”, where agricultural advancement, disorderly population growth and illegal burning are constant threats to plant diversity. Therefore, knowing the Cyperaceae flora in Serra do Cachimbo, should deliver a better understanding of the dynamics and structuring of these environments, providing data that can assist in their conservation, monitoring and management. The main objective of this work is to perform a taxonomic study of Cyperaceae occurring in Serra do Cachimbo, Pará, Brazil. The botanical material used will come from collection expeditions carried out in Serra do Cachimbo, Pará state part, and from exsiccates deposited in the collections of herbariums with expressive collections of Cyperaceae occurring in the study area (BHCB, HUFSJ, IAN, INPA, K, MG, MO, NY, RB, SPF, SP, UB, UEC and US). So far, through virtual consultation of herbarium collections and in person from the MG herbarium collection, the occurrence of 13 genera and 59 species of Cyperaceae has been detected in Serra do Cachimbo, in Pará state. Identification keys, succinct descriptions based on diagnostic characters, illustrations, as well as geographic distribution and preferred habitat data will be presented for all registered species and genera. As the project develop, we hope to provide availability of refined and reliable taxonomic and ecological data on the composition of the cyperological flora in Serra do Cachimbo, mainly through scientific articles, in addition to the increase in the collections of the consulted herbariums.
