"Polygalaceae Hoffmanns. & Link. in the Maranhense Amazon, Brazil."

KEY WORDS:

Ecotone, Fabales, Taxonomy, Conservation.

PAGES: 26
BIG AREA: Ciências Biológicas
AREA: Botânica
SUMMARY:

The Amazon Maranhense is responsible for 26% of the biodiversity of the Amazon Biome, occupying approximately 34% of the Maranhão territory, reaching 62 municipalities. Although recent studies point to the region as one of the most significant portions in terms of species richness and endemisms in the Amazon, it currently has only 25% of its original area preserved. Such vulnerability and degradation is a consequence of countless human activities. Despite its relevance in biodiversity, the State of Maranhão is only the ninth in number of known angiosperm species (ca. 3220), with studies on flora in the region being incipient, generating gaps in its real diversity. Among the angiosperms is Polygalaceae, in Brazil it is represented by 11 genera and ca. 209 species, and of these seven genera are registered for Maranhão, containing 25 species and 3 varieties. Polygalaceae are herbs with lianas, with simple, alternate and verticilated leaves, their inflorescences are racemes, panicles or umbiliform fascicles, with pentameric bisexual flowers, with sepals in one or two series. Its corolla is gamopetal, subactinomorphic, clearly pentameric or dialipetal, zygomorphic, pentameric. The stamens are epipetal or have fillets joined in an open sheath. The ovary is superposed with a single egg per locule and the fruits are capsules, berries, seedlings or samara. Some species of the family have pharmacological importance due to analgesic, antiedematogenic and antinociceptive effects, and phytochemical studies demonstrate the presence of secondary metabolites such as xanthones and coumarins. However, the limited literature focused on Polygalaceae for the region is worrying, since its expressive representation of genera and species in this area suffers from eminent and constant threats. It is worth mentioning that, in the last decade, studies of flora and revision taxonomics registered for Brazil a high number of new species of Polygalaceae. Based on the above, the objective is to carry out a taxonomic study of the genera and species of Polygalaceae in the areas of the State that correspond to the Amazon, updating their records in the collections of herbariums, with an emphasis on possible new occurrences, endemisms and new species. The botanical material will come from the herbariums with significant collections from the Amazon of Maranhão (eg MG, IAN, RB and INPA). After consulting the collection of Herbário João Murça Pires - MG and online consultations to the database of Herbário Virtual - REFLORA and the Information System - Species link, 7 genera and 26 species for the Maranhense Amazon have been found so far. Detailed descriptions, identification keys and compiled data on geographic distribution and habitat will be prepared. All species found will have their conservation status assessed, providing data that can contribute to the proper management of conservation units in the State and support future conservation projects for regional and Brazilian flora.
