RESUMO:

The Amazon biome is well known for its tall forests but it displays, in reality, a large diversity of vegetation types, among them, in southeastern Pará, the iron-rich rock outcrops known as cangas, where a predominantly herbaceous-subshrubby vegetation, rich in endemisms, is found. Known as one of the largest mineral provinces in the planet, the Serra dos Carajás region is located within a conservation unit complex that includes the Floresta Nacional de Carajás and the recently created Parque Nacional Campos Ferruginosos (PNCF). This national park is a full conservation area, and it includes the Serra do Tarzan, with well preserved surroundings counting by tall forest. Because of its inaccessibility, data regarding the flora of the area are still scarce. Thus the objective of the present project is to inventory the local flora; characterize the plant communities that grow on the canga to understand their floristic composition and the distribution of its species; map the endemic species of the canga in their different plant phygsionomies; compare the studied area with other open areas in the Amazon; contribute with authoritative data towards the conservation of the PNCF and to increase the plant knowledge in the State of Pará. Collection data survey from MG Herbarium will be added to newly collected specimens from expeditions carried out during the dry and wet season, and the vegetation will be characterized. Preliminary results identified over 400 species belonging to 87 plant families, and their occurrence in different vegetation types is being mapped. From now on, sampling will be completed and a complete list of flowering plants from the Serra do Tarzan will be prepared, in order to map endemic species, characterize vegetation types and carry out floristic comparisons and scientific papers.
