RESUMO:

Tropical forests represent the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world, however, this ecosystem suffers due to numerous environmental impacts. Among the impacts, the influence of mining in the Amazon has caused changes in watercourses and may alter the soil around them. Thus they may alter the availability of soil resources to plants (e.g. water and soil ions), which may affect plant characteristics or functional attributes. Functional attributes are traits that can reveal how plants use resources and can have trade-offs that could possibly be imposed by the environment. Therefore, it is important to investigate the functional attributes of plants in environments with possible anthropogenic changes, such as the influence of mining and various uses due to human occupation. In this sense, we will test if there are variations in leaf functional traits in three riparian vegetation species between control environments, direct impact (caused by the refinement of alumina due to its proximity to the refining area) and potential indirect impact (due to influence multiple anthropogenic impacts, such as the presence of a nearby riverine population and garbage disposal). We expect soil changes to occur and species to vary in their attributes in light of varying resource availability. The project will be accomplished out in 13 areas located in the municipality of Barcarena, Pará, Brazil. Among the areas, five will be considered control, five as Potential Direct Impact (PID) and three with Potential Indirect Impact (PII). The species of the study will be an herbaceous, belonging to the genus Calathea sp. (Maranthaceae), a liana (Tetracera sp. - Dilleniaceae) and a palm tree (Bactris sp. - Arecaceae). In each area we will collect three individuals and measure leaf attributes, namely leaf area, specific leaf area and dry matter content. We will also measure integrating attributes of leaf functioning, such as osmotic potential at maximum turgor, turgor loss point and wall elastic modulus. From these results, we will be able to know the resource allocation mechanisms of the species and understand how these species behave in possibly modified environments.
