RESUMO:

The Amazon is one of the most diverse ecosystems on earth and harbours the largest rainforest, parlty covering eight South American countries. The Brazilian Amazonian biome has an area of 25% of its territory protected by preservation areas, with 90 Conservation Units located in the state of Pará. Among these, in southeastern Pará we find the Floresta Nacional de Carajás (FLONA de Carajás), a sustainable use conservation unit, and the Parque Nacional dos Campos Ferruginosos (PNCF), a fully protected area found in the municipality of  Canaã dos Carajás and counting with two areas of canga: Serra da Bocaina and Serra do Tarzan. Canga are iron-rich rock conglomerates that have huge economic and natural importance, where a rupestrian shrubby-herbaceous vegetation grows. Studies regarding this vegetation were carried out recently by the "Flora das Cangas da Serra dos Carajás" (FCC) project and, while during the last 10 years the collecting effort was devoted mostly to areas within the FLONA de Carajás, in areas that were undergoing licencing for iron-ore mining, while PNCF remained relatively poorly sampled. Considering that each area of canga has different species composition, it is necessary to known their heterogeneity in order to indicate the best conservation strategies. The Serra da Bocaina has been impacted by intense anthropic pressures and the present study aims to prepare an angiosperm species list for the area, as well as to add information regarding life-forms, habitat and species distribution to this list, as well as to compare between the flora of the Serra da Bocaina and the Serra do Tarzan, and to contribute with current comparison studies contemplating open areas in the Amazon. To attain this finality a species survey of herbarium specimens from the area will be compiled using collections from the Herbarium João Murça Pires (MG), Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais Herbarium (BHCB), Ezechias Paulo Heringer Herbarium (HEPG) and seven expeditions to collect fertile material will be carried out. The botanical identification will be carried out using the  FCC and additional specialized bibliography. The phytossociological analyses will be carried out using Brahms, Excel, Past 3.22 and comparisons will take into account the Bray Curtis (Sørensen) distance through ordination analyses of "Non-metric multimensional scalling" (NMDS) and grouping "Unweighted Pair Group Methodmean" (UPGMA). At the moment, more than 400 species in 86 plant families are listed for the Serra da Bocaina. Among them, 318 are named to species while 170 are at family or generic level. Families with the largest species number are Poaceae, Fabaceae, Cyperaceae, Rubiaceae, Asteraceae, Myrtaceae, Melastomataceae, Orchidaceae, Lamiaceae and Malvaceae, representing 55.7% of the total species number. The more representative genera are  Rhynchospora, Myrcia, Borreria, Eleocharis, Miconia, Paspalum, Axonopus, Solanum, Aeschynomene, Bulbostylis, Eugenia, Mesosetum, Psychotria, Syngonanthus and Turnera, representing nearly 23% of the species sampled.
