Miconia stricto sensu, mostly, is the megadiverse genus of the family melastomataceae with
approx. 1,196 specimens. Its largest center of diversity is under the Amazon rainforest sensu
latíssimo, in Brazil are represented by 288 species, of which 125 are endemic. In the last
decades, the genus has not received any taxonomic treatment at the national level. The only
works of this scope date back more than a century, p. ex. Flora Brasiliensis and Monographie
Phaneropagamarum. In the Brazilian context, the studies of the group are concentrated in the
extra-Amazonian regions; while the Amazon species are among the least known in the
country. The present study aimed to elaborate a synoptic treatment of the species registered in
Pará, adding important records of Miconia to the state. From the examination of the
herbarium collections BHCB, FC, HAMAB, HCJS, HCP, HERBAM, HIFPA, HF, HSTM,
IAN, INPA, MFS, MG, RB and SP, synthetic descriptions, dichotomous taxonomies,
geographic distribution data, reproductive periods. habitat, popular names (when present on
the labels), as well as iconographic images and their preliminary conservation status
according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources
(IUCN) methodology. A total of 85 species were recorded for the state of Pará, three of which
are endemic (Miconia carajasensis sp. nova, M. santaremensis and M. secundiflora), with a
new record for Brazil (M. tschudyoides); two of the analyzed species presented a wide
geographic distribution (M. minutiflora and M. alata).
