RESUMO:

Acanthaceae covers 220 genera and about 4000 species, being among the families with the highest number of species of angiosperms, of pantropical distribution and with few representatives in temperate areas. In Brazil it is well represented, with an estimated 40 genera and 450 species, of which at least 254 are endemic. Regarding the Justicia genus, there are estimated to be around 600 species, 126 are cited in Brazil. Studies in Acanthaceae are incipient with the Amazonian species, being limited to a few works. In this perspective, a taxonomic study directed to Justicia increased the number of specimens in the Amazon herbariums and species registered for the region, thus increasing the knowledge on the distribution of these taxa not only for the State of Pará, but also for Brazil. The present taxonomic treatment was based on herborized material from the collections of the Amazon herbariums HBRA, HCJS, HSTM, IAN, MFS, MG and INPA and extra-Amazonian R, RB, BHCB, SP and SPF, as well as collection expeditions along the area of study and monitoring of cultivated plants. Twenty-eight species of the genus were identified (six as yet undetermined), including four new ones for science. As a result, morphological descriptions, taxonomic comments, information on geographic distribution and habitat, illustrations and key identification of the species of Justicia occurring in Pará are provided, thus contributing to the knowledge of the Amazon and Brazilian Flora.
