TAXONOMY STUDY OF POACEAE Barnhart IN THE CAXIUANÃ NATIONAL FOREST, EASTERN AMAZON, BRAZIL
Gramineae, Pará, taxonomy, Northern Brazil, conservation
Poaceae is a family of flowering plants with 11.000-11.500 species distributed worldwide, with high diversity in the tropics. The family occurs in many ecosystems and vegetation types, and its species can be of several life forms and present great morphological diversity. Grasses are of crucial importance in human diet (rice, wheat, oat etc), ornamental use and agroindustry. The taxonomic studies about Poaceae in Brazil increased in the last years, however, in North region of the country, few information about taxonomy and florsitics of this family is avalable. The aim of this project is to develop a taxonomic study of the family Poaceae in Caxiuanã National Forest (FNC), Pará state, Brazil, contributing to the knowledge of the grasses and the flora of the Amazon. The FNC is located in northern Pará, with about 330.000 hectares. In the area, the climate is Am type, tropical humid with high annual precipitation, the predominant vegetation is Terra Firme forest, but Igapó forest, Várzea forest, Campinaranas and aquatic vegetation are also found. Collection of botanical specimens will be done through random walking in the different vegetation types of the FNC, following usual methods for botanical collections. Species identification will follow the literature. Morphological descriptions, identification keys, illustrations and field photographs of all collected species will be made, aiming to assist species identification. It is expected that the results of this study will contribute with the floristic survey of the FNC, with possible new records for the area, and also with the knowledge of the poorly studied Amazonian grass flora.
