SUMMARY:

Orchidaceae is the second largest botanical family in Brazil, with approximately 2,500 species,
distributed in 247 genera. Its distribution encompasses all phytogeographic domains of the
country, with emphasis on the Atlantic Forest and the Amazon, where they present the greatest
richness, respectively. In these domains, the family also stands out in the restingas, a pioneering
formation of marine influence that occurs in sandy soils along the Brazilian coast, generally
associated with beaches. Although the Amazonian restingas are the subject of research in
several botanical studies, an updated list that presents witness material for Orchidaceae remains
absent and records of occurrence are diffuse. Thus, in order to synthesize information and
complement it through new collections, the objective was to carry out a taxonomic study with
Orchidaceae in restingas of the Salgado Microregion (MS), in the state of Pará, Brazil, in
addition to delimiting the restinga vegetation in the Amazon and carrying out a checklist of the
family in this vegetation type in the Brazilian Amazon. Seven field expeditions were carried
out, from October 2023 to November 2024, in the restingas of the municipalities of Curuçá,
Maracanã, Marapanim, Salinópolis and São João de Pirabas. Species data were obtained from
digital databases and literature, and consultations were carried out in the collections of regional
herbariums (FC, HBRA, HCP, HF, HIFPA, IAN, MFS and MG). The restinga vegetation in the
Brazilian Amazon, as delimited in the first chapter, occurs on the northeast coast of the state of
Pará and the west of the state of Maranhão, with similar vegetation being observed on the coast
of Marajó Island, in Pará, with a dominant fluviomarine influence. In the Amazonian restingas,
Orchidaceae is represented by 20 species, which are presented in the checklist in the second
chapter. Of these, 15 species occur in MS, namely: Catasetum roseoalbum, Cleistes
castaneoides, Encyclia granitica, Epidendrum carpophorum, Epidendrum ciliare, Epidendrum
strobiliferum, Habenaria cruegeri, Habenaria depressifolia, Habenaria petalodes,
Oeceoclades maculata, Polystachya concreta, Prosthechea aemula, Sobralia liliastrum,
Trichocentrum cepula and Vanilla sp., for which descriptions are presented in the third chapter,
as well as an identification key and a photographic guide. Restingas are classified as Permanent
Preservation Areas, a type of Conservation Unit that is important for the preservation of national
biodiversity. It is expected that the list presented will assist in public policies that strengthen
the conservation of natural ecosystems in the Brazilian Amazon.
