SUMMARY:
Tropical forests have never been as prominent as they are in recent years. With extreme climate events happening all over the world, the conservation of this important natural resource has gained significant attention in global discussions, particularly when it comes to climate change. Brazil is considered the second-largest country in terms of forest area in the world, and its main challenge is to reconcile economic development with the sustainability of its resources. Against this backdrop, Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) have resurfaced as an alternative for sustainable use, gaining more visibility and contributing to new concepts such as Sociobiodiversity and Sociobioeconomics. In order to contribute to this Brazilian agenda, this Research Project aims to study the diameter structure of Brazil nut and copaíba populations (two major NTFPs in Brazil) based on data from 100% inventory surveys conducted in Conservation Areas, analyzing the potential for the sustainable management of these species and informing specific public policies for NTFPs. The data was collected between 2008 and 2021 in five Conservation Areas (02 FLONAs and 03 RESEXs) located in the Amazon. The data has been tabulated and is being analyzed according to the specific objectives of the project. At the end of the study, two articles are planned on the Diametric Distribution of the species and their potential for Sustainable Forest Management, one article on the Potential of NTFPs for income generation in Conservation Areas of the Amazon, one article on the State of the Art of Sustainable Forest Management of NTFPs in Brazil, as well as a document with basic guidelines for NTFP Forest Management.
