SUMMARY:

The floodplains of the Amazon are dynamic ecosystems, characterized by periodic flooding and marked seasonal variations between the flood and drought periods. Although several studies on fauna and flora have been carried out in these environments, data on fungal diversity is still scarce. Among the fungi present are asexual ascomycetes, which play a fundamental ecological role by colonizing submerged plant substrates, contributing to the nutrient cycle and energy flow in aquatic ecosystems. With the aim of expanding knowledge about this group, this study carried out an inventory of asexual ascomycetes in floodplain areas of Marajó Island, Pará, Brazil. Four expeditions were carried out in floodplain areas of the municipality of Cachoeira do Arari, located on the east coast of the island, between January and September 2024. The samples collected were washed in running water and kept in a humid chamber for up to 45 days. The reproductive structures of the fungi were observed under a stereomicroscope and mounted on semi-permanent slides for morphological analysis and identification. In total, 228 taxa were identified, distributed in 121 genera, 52 families, 36 orders and five classes, with 105 taxa identified at a specific level. Most of the fungi occurred on branches (112), followed by leaves (84), and 32 ran on both substrates. The results show a high diversity of asexual ascomycetes acting as decomposers of submerged litter in the floodplains of Marajó Island. This study reports one new record of an asexual ascomycete for the state of Pará (Chaetopsina fulva), six new records for Amazonia (Arthrotaeniolella aquatica, Beltraniella havanensis, Circinotrichum falcatisporum, Eversia parvula, Paliphora bilorata, and Zanclospora bonfinensis), three for South America (Helicorhoidion pulchrum, Spadicoides cubensis and Xylocladium clautriavii), and two for the American continent (Sporidesmiella incrassata and Trichocladium aquaticum). In addition, a new species, Deightoniella sp. nov., is described. This work significantly expands knowledge of fungi from Amazonian aquatic environments and highlights the importance of studies in Amazonian floodplains to explore the region's fungal biodiversity.
