SUMMARY:

Asexual ascomycetes play a crucial role in maintaining trophic balance, as they participate in the decomposition of organic matter and nutrient cycling. They can also act as parasites of plants and animals or exist as endophytes in plant tissues. This study aimed to inventory asexual ascomycetes associated with decomposing leaves of Astrocaryum vulgare Mart. in areas of the Eastern Amazon, Pará, Brazil. Three collections were conducted in each area (Abaetetuba, Cachoeira do Arari, and Soure) between January and July 2024. In each area, 15 individuals of A. vulgare were selected, and five samples of decomposing substrates (sheaths, bunches, leaflets, petioles, rachises) were collected from each individual, totaling 225 substrates per collection. In the laboratory, the substrates were washed with running water and subsequently stored in humid chambers for up to 45 days. The microstructures of the fungi were examined under a stereomicroscope and mounted on semi-permanent slides for identification. A total of 136 taxa of asexual ascomycetes were identified, distributed across 80 genera, 32 families, 23 orders, and 6 classes. Most fungi were found in rachises (56), followed by leaves (55), petioles (50), clusters (28), sheaths (26), spathes (3), and living leaflets (3). This study contributed to expanding the taxonomic and biogeographic knowledge of fungi in the Amazon region by reporting new records for Pará: Chloridium chloroconium (W. Gams & Hol.-Jech.) Réblová & Seifert; Cordana terrestris (Timonin) Hern.-Restr., Gené & Guarro; Helicoubisia coronata Lunghini & Rambelli; Penzigomyces nodipes (Penz. & Sacc.) Subram; and Sporidesmiella claviformis P.M. Kirk. New records for the Amazon Biome include: Anisospadicoides macroobovata (Matsush.) M. Qiao, Z.F. Yu & R.F. Castañeda; Linkosia longirostrata G. Delgado; and Pseudopithomyces maydicus (Sacc.) Jun F. Li, Ariyaw. & K.D. Hyde. Additionally, a new record for Brazil, Diplococcium peruamazonicum Matsush., and two new records for South America: Catenularia minor (Hol.-Jech.) Réblová & A.N. Mill.; Ellisembia opaca (Cooke & Harkn.) Subram.; and two for the American continent: Sporidesmium paradecorosum Dulym., W.P. Wu & Peerally; and Sporidesmium raphiae M.B. Ellis. This study also describes new species belonging to the genera Sporidesmiella P.M. Kirk, Linkosia A. Hern.-Gut. & B. Sutton, and Penzigomyces Subram.
