SUMMARY:
Tropical forests are important centers of the world's biodiversity and carbon. However, the advance of deforestation has fragmented these forests to critical levels, and the understanding of the impacts of this fragmentation still has significant gaps, particularly in understanding the impact on tree wood, which are the largest carbon stocks in the tropics. In this context, this study aims to evaluate, through dendrochronological methods, the radial growth of two tree species with different starch storage strategies, in edge and interior environments of a seasonally dry forest in the Amazon-Cerrado transition. We collected radial samples using a Pressler borer (5 mm diameter) from two species at the edge (6 individuals) and interior (6 individuals) of a seasonally dry forest in the state of Mato Grosso. The samples were sanded with different grit sandpapers, dated using dendrochronological methods, and the results were validated using software and radiocarbon analyses. Our results suggest that both species have annual rings, but the application of the dendrochronological method to trees at the edge is more complex, requiring greater attention and sampling. Additionally, our data also suggest that the stress caused by the forest edge may impair the annuality of the growth rings in the species that stores starch in fibers.
