PAGES: 28
BIG AREA: Ciências Biológicas
AREA: Botânica
SUMMARY:

The Amazon is one of the most biodiverse tropical forests on the planet and its preservation provides a desirable environmental balance, which is extremely important for regulating the climate and therefore maintaining life. Included in an alarming scenario of deforestation, the island of Marajó, located on the northern coast of Brazil, has not always had its ecological importance taken into account with environmental and water management that preserves or generates minimal impacts on its biodiversity, the development and improvement of the quality of life of its population, the organization of the process of occupation and sustainability in the use of natural resources by the Marajoaras. With these objectives in mind, the Marajó Archipelago Environmental Protection Area (APA) was created in 1989. It is a sustainable use environmental preservation unit with a great diversity of Amazonian ecosystems, such as flooded fields, sandbanks, mangroves, Amazonian savannas and ombrophilous forests, influenced by hydrography, tides and climate. Since Cyperaceae species are abundant in open phytophysiognomies in the Amazon, they are fundamental to understanding the dynamics and structure of these environments, and can provide data to help in their conservation, monitoring and management. In addition, recent taxonomic studies focused on Cyperaceae in the Brazilian Amazon have shown new distribution records, endemisms, species new to science and many new nomenclatural features, demonstrating enormous potential for further research. Based on these issues, this project aims to advance understanding of the diversity of Cyperaceae in the Marajó Archipelago APA, through floristic surveys and taxonomic studies. The botanical material will come from collecting expeditions and herbarium collections (e.g. HBRA, IAN, MFS and MG) and will follow the usual techniques of collection, herborization and taxonomy. The development of the project is expected to provide robust and reliable data on the composition of the cyperological flora of the Marajó Archipelago APA, through at least two scientific articles (annotated floristic list, discussing morphology, habitats, ecology, taxonomy and distribution; and a complete taxonomic treatment of Eleocharis), an increase in herbarium collections (new determinations and collections) and, above all, the training of specialized and nucleated human resources in the Amazon, contributing, above all, to the advancement of knowledge of the Cyperological Flora of the state of Pará and, consequently, of the Amazonian and Brazilian Flora.
