PAGES: 54
BIG AREA: Ciências Biológicas
AREA: Botânica
SUMMARY:
Essential oils (EOs) are substances rich in volatile compounds produced in the secondary metabolism of plants, which confer aroma and have various biological properties. The genus Myrcia is an important source of EOs, presenting numerous species with therapeutic and biotechnological potential. Within this genus, the species Myrcia sylvatica is of particular interest due to its chemical variability, which may be associated with climatic factors, foliar nutrients, extraction techniques, among others, making it a significant target for scientific study. This study  aims to conduct a comprehensive review of the Myrcia genus, focusing on its chemical composition and biological activity, with an emphasis on the species M. sylvatica, analyzing its therapeutic and biotechnological potential. To achieve this, a compilation of information about the Myrcia genus was conducted, focusing on its chemical composition and biological activity. Additionally, the hydrodistillation extraction method, which involves heating the plant in water to release volatile compounds, will be used to obtain the essential oil of M. sylvatica. The chemical composition analysis will then be performed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with the Shimadzu QP-2010 plus system.
To evaluate the antioxidant capacity of the species, the ABTS and DPPH assays will be employed, both of which are based on the ability to neutralize free radicals. The antifungal analysis will be performed using the agar disk diffusion method and broth microdilution to determine both the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC). As a result, a comprehensive compilation of information regarding the biological activities of Myrcia EOs was obtained. It is expected to also achieve the chemical characterization and the evaluation of the antioxidant and antifungal activities of the essential oil of Myrcia sylvatica.
