SUMMARY:

The Orchidaceae family comprises 133 genera and 783 species in the Brazilian Amazon, and 94 genera and 377 species are recognized in the state of Pará. However, despite the great richness species, there are still regions of Pará that are poorly sampled, such as the island of Marajó, the largest fluvial-maritime island in the world. The aim of this study was to carry out a floristictaxonomic survey of Orchidaceae species of the municipality of Cachoeira do Arari, Marajó Island, Pará. Monthly field expeditions were carried out between November 2022 and January 2024, during the dry and rainy seasons in the region. The specimens collected, when fertile, were deposited in the MG herbarium, and, when sterile, cultivated in a greenhouse to monitor flowering and subsequent identification and herborization. In Cachoeira do Arari, there are 30 genera, 45 species and one natural hybrid of orchids, of which 40 occur as epiphytes, five as terrestrials and one as hemiepiphyte. The most representative genera were Epidendrum L., with eight species and one natural hybrid, followed by Catasetum Rich. ex Kunth (four species), Polystachya Hook. and Notylia Lindl. (three species each), and Maxillaria Ruiz & Pav. and Vanilla Plum. ex Mill. (two species each). Epidendrum × doroteae P.H. Allen and Epidendrum macroophorum Hágsater & Dodson are recorded here for the first time for Brazil and the distribution of Epidendrum purpureocaulis Essers & Sambin is expanded to the state of Pará. This study contributed to increase knowledge about the Orchidaceae of Marajó Island and Brazilian Amazon. It is expected that, based on the data available, studies with a conservation focus can be carried out, providing strategies and actions to protect orchids locally.
