SUMMARY:

Vascular epiphytes are plants that germinate and grow on trees in a non-parasitic relationship, and are primarily of great ecological importance. The Amazon is known for its high plant biodiversity, however, regional data on vascular epiphytes are considered incipient. The present study aims to carry out a multidisciplinary approach to vascular epiphytes (including hemi-epiphytes) in the Amazon, which includes a systematic review of sinusitis in the Amazon, aiming to present a qualitative and quantitative diagnosis of studies published up to 2022 (Chapter I). The aim is also to carry out floristic surveys of vascular epiphytes in areas of streams (igarapés, in the regional denomination) in the northeast of Pará (Chapter II) and ecological niche modeling of the species surveyed (Chapter III), aiming to identify whether humid areas can constitute a refuge for vascular epiphytes in landscapes anthropized. The systematic review was carried out using articles obtained from the Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science databases through searches with terms related to vascular epiphytes in the Amazon. Inventories of vascular epiphytes in the northeast of Pará are being carried out in the municipalities of Capitão Poço, Garrafão do Norte, Irituia, Ourém and Nova Espera do Piriá, in a total of 40 transects of 2 x 100 m (two locations in each municipality and four plots at each location), to obtain ecological data on epiphytes and their respective phorophytes. To model the ecological niche of the species that will occur in the inventories, occurrence information will be collected in virtual herbarium networks. The systematic review included 291 articles, published from 1933 to 2022, indicating notable progress in knowledge about vascular epiphytes in the Amazon region, mainly as a result of floristic surveys and taxonomic studies. On the other hand, studies on floral and reproductive biology, biochemistry, phytochemistry, anatomy and physiology were scarce. As for inventories, to date, 12 families, 45 genera and 76 species have been identified in eight study areas. Of these species, 57 were identified at a specific level and will be used in the assessment of ecological niche modeling. The results constitute important data to consolidate information on vascular epiphytes at different spatial scales in the Amazon.
