TITLE:
Morphoanatomy and phytochemical profile of Vanilla leaves (Orchidaceae): Taxonomic implications
KEY WORDS:
Chemotaxonomy, secondary metabolites, vanilin.
PAGES: 28
BIG AREA: Ciências Biológicas
AREA: Botânica
SUMMARY:
Vanilla Mill. it presents great morphological diversity, being composed of predominantly hemiepiphytic species, which are recognized primarily by the morphology of reproductive characters. However, due to
irregular flowering and short-lived flowers, the genus constitutes a slow group in terms of taxonomic identification. Therefore, the genus presents a complex taxonomy, with species presenting subtle morphological differences. Aiming to optimize time for infrageneric identification and greater assertiveness in identifications, the search for new characters through anatomy and phytochemistry, especially vegetative characters, are essential for expanding diagnostic data for the taxon. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the taxonomic potential of leaf anatomical characters and leaf phytochemical profile in Vanilla. To this end, a survey of specimens collected in the state of Pará and deposited in herbaria will be carried out, through databases available online. After the survey, 10 taxa and 3 specimens of each taxon that are
deposited in Brazilian herbaria will be selected, from which samples

of fully expanded leaves will be collected for structural anatomical analysis. For chemical profile analyses, leaf samples will be collected from a total of 6 individuals (3 samples per specimen) of the species Vanilla labellopapillata A.K.Koch, Fraga, J.U.Santos & Ilk.-Borg. and Vanilla pompona Schiede, from the Utinga State Park (PEUt), located in Pará. With the fresh specimens, histochemical and phytochemical analyzes will be carried out for qualitative and quantitative recognition of the secondary metabolites present in the samples. From independent and integrated analyzes of the data obtained, it is expected to recognize new diagnostic characters for infrageneric identification in Vanilla, which will allow the identification of specimens outside the flowering period, expanding taxonomic information about the genus.
