PAGES: 224
BIG AREA: Ciências Biológicas

SUMMARY:

The genus Scleria is among the most diverse of Cyperaceae, composed of terrestrial or rarely aquatic herbs, with pantropical distribution and about 260 species. It is located in the subfamily Cyperoideae and monogeneric tribe Sclerieae, is monophyletic and is organized into four subgenus: Scleria subgenus Brownie, S. subg. Hypoporum, S. subg. Scleria and S. subg. Trachylomia. The largest subgenus of Scleria is the typical, with 149 spp. distributed in 12 sections. Among these, Scleria subg. S. sect. Hymenolytrum has 15 spp. and large occurrence in northern South America. Phylogenies based on molecular data evidenced this section as monophyletic. The section features organisms of relative morphological similarity and, in addition, detailed descriptions of the species are scarce, and often ambiguous, making it difficult to recognize characters of taxonomic relevance, and consequently the determination of their species. Furthermore, leaf anatomical characters deserve special attention, as they have already assisted in the delimitation of species or groups of species in Scleria. Thus, it is proposed the development of morphological, anatomical, and molecular phylogenetic studies, and a taxonomic review, searching to elucidate the diversity, species circumscription, evolutionary relationships and monophyleticism of Scleria subg. S. sect. Hymenolytrum. For this, field expeditions will be realized to collect new specimens and herborized materials will be analyzed, including nomenclatural types. Organisms will be pre-classified into morphotaxa for the delineation of morphological variability and acquisition of anatomical and molecular data. The anatomical studies will be developed through the analysis of the mesophyll, focusing on the median and marginal region of the leaf blade, and also through the superficial analysis of the epidermis. Molecular studies will be developed using cpDNA (ndhF and rps16 intron) and nrDNA (ETS and ITS) data. Phylogenetic analyzes will be estimated by Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference. So far, about 400 specimens were analyzed, 25 morphotaxons were classified and approximately 50 names had their taxonomy studied, revealing the need for four types and others are still under investigation.
