SUMMARY:

Eleocharisare aquatic plants belonging to the family Cyperaceae, widely distributed in Tropical and Subtropical regions and comprises approximately 250 species. The morphology of Eleocharisis simple, such as reduced leaves, a tubular sheath, absence of the typical involucral bracts found in Cyperaceae, and an inflorescence reduced to a single terminal spikelet, characteristics that make its identification a great challenge, as many diagnostic characteristics of the species are associated to small structures. Studies with molecular phylogenetic tested the traditionally accepted morphological classification, and despite the high support for many of the infragenic clades and taxa, the study evidenced the low sampling and little support in some taxa like Eleocharis ser. Tenuissimae. Both series comprise three large groups of species complexes, Eleocharis minima, Eleocharis retroflexaand, Eleocharisnigrescens,which are the least understood within the genus, generating forced taxonomic identification, due to the wide range of morphological variation and the difficulty of finding diagnostic characters.Extensive fieldwork in potential areas has been carried out since 2019, in order to obtain sufficient samples for the most robust phylogenetic reconstruction. Morphological analysis of Eleocharis specimens, using specific identification keys, protologue consultations, and visualization of nomenclatural types of species online, and the main Amazonian herbaria have already been consulted (MG, INPA, IAN AND HSTM) and other herbaria will still be consulted (BHCB, CEN, FLOR, HUEFS, R, RB). The nomenclatural types of the species will be requested, deposited in the herbaria, mainly to the international ones (B, GH, GENT, K, P, MO, NY and US). Total DNA will be extracted, and PCR amplification will be performed for markers that have already been used in studies of the genus. Along with the sequences generated in this study will be added sequences already available in GenBank. To reconstruct phylogenetic hypotheses of Eleocharis based on molecular characters, Bayesian Inference will be performed in Mr. Bayes, and Maximum likelihood analysis in RAxML. To estimate the divergence time of the lineages, I will use the software BEAST. With this, it is expected to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships of Eleocharis ser.Tenuissimae and delimit its species, thus generating a robust phylogeny, together with a review of the species of Eleocharis ser.Tenuissimae. In addition to the publication of the possible new taxonomic and nomenclatural as new species, new records and new synonyms.
