SUMMARY:

In Brazil, the Savannah/Forest Seasonal contact exceeds 6000 km2, coinciding with one of the largest agricultural frontiers in the world, the “Arc of Deforestation”. This Ecological Tension Zone (ETZ) occurs in the form of a transitional forest and, for this reason, we do not know the real role of the species in the maintenance and structure of the vegetation in the face of increasing events of burning and deforestation. In this project, we seek to select structuring species for the restoration of the Amazon/Cerrado ecotone, based on ecological groups and through the combination of study areas and systematic literature review to obtain phytosociological data and morphological functional traits. The study is being conducted in the floristic contact between Amazonia/Cerrado, understood as an Ecological Tension Zone (ETZ). The collection of phytosociological data was carried out with the allocation of 10 fixed plots of 1,000 m2 (50 m x 20 m) distributed in 3 areas of transitional forest in the Araguaia River basin, district of Barreira do Campo. All individuals with DAS ≥ 5 cm found inside the plots were measured, recording the species name, diameter at breast height (DBH) and total height. A systematic literature review will be used to categorize species into ecological groups. For the analysis of the morphological functional traits, apical branches of 5 individuals/specie of each structuring species (3 areas) were collected, 100 m apart. We will evaluate a set of phytosociological parameters: relative density (DR), relative dominance (DoR), relative frequency (FR), importance value (VI) and cover value index (CVI), and morphological functional traits: leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf thickness, leaf dry matter content and wood density to group the structuring species into planting groups according to their ecophysiological demands, determinants for the success in the recovery of the largest savannah-forest transition area on the planet.
