"Diversity of Cyperaceae Juss. in Serra do Cachimbo, Pará, Brazil"
Ecotone. Floristics. Rhynchospora. Taxonomy
Cyperaceae Juss. is a cosmopolitan family that occurs in all tropical and subtropical regions of the world, inhabiting almost all terrestrial and aquatic environments, acting in important ecological processes, besides having economic and ethnobotanical relevance. It is made of the subfamilies Mapanioideae and Cyperoideae that together record about 5,690 species distributed in 95 genera, forming the third largest monocot family. In Brazil, it is present in all phytogeographic domains, where the Amazon has the greatest diversity of genera and the second greatest number of species. Serra do Cachimbo is located in the southern Amazon, between the states of Pará and Mato Grosso, is a mountainous region that encompasses the Amazon-Cerrado ecotone, formed by a mosaic of forest and non-forest phytophysiognomies. The vegetation of campinarana, savanna and campo rupestre represent a large coverage of the area, and are characterized by the predominance of Cyperaceae, presenting potential for the study of the family. The area is part of the "arc of deforestation" region and presents problems around the BR-163 highway that has led to processes of degradation and destruction of the vegetation of Serra do Cachimbo. Therefore, the objective of this dissertation was to provide a floristic study for the family Cyperaceae in Serra do Cachimbo, with a taxonomic focus on the genus Rhynchospora. To this aim, two botanical expeditions were carried out in September-October 2019 and May 2021, in addition to consulting the collections of the MG, IAN, INPA, BHCB, HUFSJ, RB, SP, SPF, UB, UEC, K, MO, NY, and US herbaria. The dissertation is divided into two chapters. The first one provides a documented listing for the 70 species and 14 genera of Cyperaceae found in Serra do Cachimbo, with information on their habitats, taxonomic comments, and geographic distribution; the genera identified were: Cyperus (17 spp.), Rhynchospora (14 spp.), Scleria (11 spp.), Eleocharis (11 spp.), Bulbostylis (6 spp.), Calyptrocarya (2 spp.), Fimbristylis (2 spp.), Becquerelia (1 spp.), Cryptangium (1 spp.), Diplacrum (1 spp.), Exochogyne (1 spp.), Fuirena (1 spp.), Hypolytrum (1 spp.) and Lagenocarpus (1 spp.). Besides four new records for Pará: Cyperus capillifolius, C. rigens, Eleocharis alveolatoides and E. pachystyla. The second chapter is a contribution to the taxonomic knowledge of the genus Rhynchospora in Serra do Cachimbo, containing an identification key, diagnostic morphological description, geographical distribution, habitat, taxonomic comments and illustrations for all 14 species found. It was concluded in this study that Serra do Cachimbo presents a considerable richness of Cyperaceae species, a large part of this value is due to the open vegetation that makes the area, but it is believed that this quantity of records is still underestimated due to its large territorial extension, where most of the specimen collections were concentrated in localities with easier access. Thus, there is a need for further studies for regions farther away from urban centers to fill these gaps.
