SUMMARY:

Radula Dumort., the only known genus in Radulaceae, is a speciose lineage of the leafy liverworts (Marchantiophyta: Jungermaniidae) with about 250 extant species. The center of diversity is in humid tropical and warm-temperate regions and the majority of the species are epiphytes in moist lowland and montane Rainforests. Unique morphological traits such as Radula-type branches, underleaves absent, lobulate leaves with rhizoids originating in tufts from the lobule surface, and narrowly tubular perianths, dorsiventrally flattened, easily distinguish Radulaceae from other liverwort families. Integrative taxonomic studies, which relied on results of molecular-phylogenetic analyses and the morphological characters of the gametophyte, have provided evidence for a subdivision of Radula in seven subgenera, but the morphological definitions of these subgenera remain problematic and the assignment of many of the species to these subgenera are unclear, especially in tropical America. Taxonomic reviews for Radula are available for species occurring in temperate forests and the paleotropical regions of the globe, but species from the Neotropical region, one of the main centers of diversity in the genus with about 75 currently accepted species, have not been monographed and remain insufficiently known. The aim of this project is to conduct an integrative taxonomic revision of the genus Radula in the Neotropics, based on a comprehensive study of types, additional herbarium collections and field collections, and using morphological and molecular evidence. To this end, species occurring in tropical America will be addressed through gametophyte and sporophyte characters, which will be accomplished by looking at type specimens and additional specimens deposited in herbaria and specimens collected in field expeditions. Species will be identified by consulting nomenclatural types, original works, specialized literature, and through information available on online sites. The molecular phylogenetic study will be based on plastid regions of the chloroplasts (psbT-psbH, psb-trnH, rps4, atpB-rbcL, trnG e trnL-trnF) and will follow the models and protocols already established in previous studies for the genus. With the results of this project we expect to publish at least three manuscripts, including: (1) the taxonomic revision of Radula to the netropics and (2) taxonomic changes found in the genus.
