SUMMARY:

The different changes in land use and cover have promoted significant losses of biodiversity and ecosystem services, especially in tropical forests. The conversion of native forests for agricultural purposes, mining, logging, among other uses, has compromised the functioning of tropical forests and altered the ecological strategies of the species. Studying the functional attributes of plants helps to understand how they are able to acquire, invest and use their resources under the new environmental conditions. The development of this work, based on a literature review, seeks to answer the following question: how changes in land use and cover affect the functional attributes of plants in Neotropical humid forests. To answer this question, we carried out an evaluation through a scientometric approach and meta-analysis of functional attributes of plants that were sampled in environments modified by different types of land use and land cover conversions. For scientometrics we evaluated 122 articles. Most studies were carried out in Brazil and there was a growing interest in the topic from 2015 onwards. The main land use changes studied were pasture and agriculture and the main attributes evaluated included specific leaf area, leaf area and wood density. Differences were observed between the attributes in conserved and disturbed areas in most of the publications looking at the individual studies, but the results were not statistically significant for both group and subgroup analysis (moderator), due to the amount of works found for the analysis . However, the results that we show indicate how promising it is to evaluate functional attributes in this context of land use changes, in which one can understand from the response of individual plants to scaling to understand the functioning of tropical forests in the region. neotropical. However, much still needs to be done, including attributes involving other tissues and plant physiology, in addition to doing more tests in future research between control and treatment groups to verify if there is any pattern of response of attributes in relation to changes in land use.
