SUMMARY:

The expansion of the agricultural frontier on Amazonia has contributed to the loss of forest cover due to deforestation. One of the regions most affected by forest loss cover is the Itacaiúnas river basin in southeastern Pará. The basin is placed in the region of the deforestation arc, showing high deforestation rates, reaching up to 51% of forests loss. Brazil has committed to restoring 12 million hectares of forest through the National Plan for the Recovery of Native Vegetation, of which 4.8 million hectares are placed in Amazonia. There are several potential native species to be used in forest restoration efforts in deforested areas of the Itacaiúnas river basin. However, studies on species distribution in the region are scarce and how those species can be applied in restoration efforts of the areas deforested. The distribution of a species can be estimated using the species distribution modelling technique, which generates maps of species potential distribution based on the correlation between species occurrence data and environmental conditions at occurrence sites. Distribution models also allow the assessment of species distribution in future climate scenarios. This feature allows the assessment of the impacts of climate change on species distribution, which can contribute to the selection of species for forest restoration based on the recruitment of species resilient to the impacts of climate change. Species distribution models can also contribute to the definition of areas in the basin that are less impacted by climate change in the future and can have a greater potential for forest restoration. Thus, the use of the technique allows planning for forest restoration success by aiming to select species that can withstand new climatic conditions. This project aims to assess the impact of climate change on species selection for forest restoration in the Itacaiúnas river basin. The results obtained will allow analyzing the distribution of species in the present and the future and selecting them for use in forest restoration projects in the region.
