SUMMARY:

The Utinga State Park (PEUT), with its 1,393.088 ha of extension, had its territorial area established by amending State Decree No. 1.330 of October 2, 2008, and State Decree No. 265 of November 30, 2011. It is inserted in the Metropolitan Region of Belém-Pará. It was created in 1993 as an Environmental Park of Belém, in order to protect the Bolonha and Água Preta lakes, water sources responsible for supplying water to the population of Belém. As it is an urban park, it suffers a series of external pressures. Floristic studies and surveys are usually focused on the tree and shrub strata, neglecting the herbaceous and subshrub strata. For the PEUT to fulfill its mission to conserve and restore the aquatic springs and preserve the biodiversity and ecosystems contained therein, as stated in the management plan, a more comprehensive study of the flora is necessary. In the state of Pará, fully inserted in the Amazon, 199 species and 16 genera of Cyperaceae occur. This work aims to carry out a taxonomic study of genera and species of Cyperaceae Juss. in Utinga State Park, Belém, Pará, Brazil, aiming to help expand the knowledge of the flora of Utinga Park, Pará, and consequently of the Amazonian and Brazilian Flora. From the botanical collections (IAN, INPA, MFS, RB, UB), available in the sites "Species Link" and "Reflora- Virtual Herbarium", it was possible to obtain a listing of 7 genera and 17 species of Cyperaceae occurring in PEUT (table 1), with two of these species identified only at the genus level and two samples recorded with heterotypic synonyms of the currently accepted names. The most representative genera so far are, Rhynchospora Vahl (8 sp.), Eleocharis R. Br. (3 sp.), and Cyperus Juss (2 sp.). Through this work, we hope to obtain a more comprehensive survey of the genera and species of Cyperaceae Juss occurring in Utinga State Park, to make a morphological description of them, focusing on relevant taxonomic characters, as well as to update the species names and contribute to the herbarium collections. If new occurrences, records, or new species are found, these results will be published as scientific articles in periodicals, as well as other results obtained during the research, providing subsidies for the management and conservation of the PEUT, and consequently contributing to the Flora of Utinga Project.
