SUMMARY:

Urban gardens are agricultural spaces managed by the surrounding community where they are built, in efforts to cultivate a variety of foods and/or flowers, adding green areas to cities. The thesis project has the general objective of analyzing urban gardens in comparison with food security, in a comparative perspective with the objectives of sustainable development in municipalities in the metropolitan region of Belém, which will be built from two specific objectives: i) to diagnose the presence of urban gardens in the metropolitan region that contribute to food security, bringing the surveyed cities closer to sustainable development goals; and, ii) to know the governmental initiatives, in practice, to ensure food security, fulfilling the objectives of sustainable development in the municipalities of the metropolitan region of Belém, in order to test two hypotheses: that urban gardens in the metropolitan region of Belém contribute to security food, bringing the researched cities closer to the sustainable development objectives, that the activity happens due to an innate awareness in farmers and that there is a lack of public and private policies to promote the training/qualification of farmers to guarantee food security and to fulfill the objectives of sustainable development. Primary data collected from the application of a semi-structured questionnaire directly in communities that develop urban agriculture in three municipalities in the metropolitan region of Belém (Ananindeua, Belém and Marituba) will be used to: i) enable the analysis of urban gardens in parallel with food security; and, ii) to know the urban gardens in perspective compared with the objectives of sustainable development in municipalities of the metropolitan region of Belém.
